I continue to feel honoured to be asked to write an introduction for the final year students of Interior Architecture & Design BA (Hons) degree here at Nottingham Trent University. This years group has enhanced the atmosphere of the design studio bringing their individual and unique personalities to our everyday teaching. The studio has been lively, creative and somewhat industrious; in line with the focus of their final major project; where they have chosen a building with a link to industry. Offering us INDENT.

The project engages with a real-life problem affecting redundant industrial buildings and the loss of heritage and significance. Driven by the knowledge that research and design are intrinsic and inseparable, it has given the opportunity to fully research and develop an idea. This may come from their research project, or it could be a new idea, then translated into a manifesto, with the building becoming the vessel for their idea.

The Interior Architecture & Design degree at NTU has a very long history as it continues to evolve and develop, being fluid, multi-disciplinary and working between the disciplines of Architecture and Interior Design, with our 3D’s for IAD encompassing; Year 1: Discover, Year 2: Develop and Year 3: Define. This academic year has seen guest speakers & projects from Hawkins Brown, the National Trust, Latham Architecture & Urban Design, Artists & Illustrators and Alumni of IAD. The design tutor and review team has bought experience from artistic backgrounds, Architecture, Design studio, the RCA, and the fields of Conservation, Interiors and Landscape Architecture.

It is truly a privilege to be part of the students learning experience especially here at Nottingham Trent University. We will miss very much the humour, the inventiveness and the dynamic, that this year group has given, and we all wish them every success for their future achievements.
