The Transhipment Warehouse is situated in the Peak District, in the town of Whaley Bridge on the Cheshire / Derbyshire border. The building was first erected in 1801 to join the Cromford & High Peak Railway with the Peak Forest Canal for the coal and limestone industries; storing rubble, limestone products, and coal, and loading narrow boats to take goods to Manchester and beyond. Although the warehouse has been vacant since the canal’s commercial traffic ceased in the 1970s, it remains an iconic building within the town and its grounds are used as a base for town fêtes and carnivals.

The maker movement focuses on the value of craft, and the making of real, physical things in an increasingly digital and intangible society. The Transhipment warehouse will retain its practical use, and provide a platform for this movement; offering studios, workshops, classes, leisure, and exhibition; creating and nurturing a community of makers.
