Environmental specialist and former miner’s grandson, James Kelly, headed back to his routes at Force Crag Mine. With the scaring of the land that his ancestors have left due to the 20th century mining industry he has taken it upon himself to set up a body of research into contamination of the land within the Lake District, metal pollution has massively deteriorated the soils, water ways and landscaping of the valleys. With the aim to restore the contaminated land back to its original condition and continuing the research for other contaminated sites across the world, providing sustainable methods of metal extraction.

With the mission set of abolishing metal pollution, research will be ongoing, inviting university students to stay and help to regenerate the area through the metal abolition programme running at the mine.

As an area being exposed to the elements, it will be through the weather and the manipulation of the weather that environments will be created in order to regrow and replant – rebuilding the surrounding site. Rain water is channelled through the building, being treated for metal pollution as it flows and providing the rest of the site with a renewable water source.
