People are often healthier and happier when they are exposed to views and access to nature and daylight. I also found people recovering often reason well to environments that have space for social interaction as well as private spaces to retreat. Other beneficial factors include calming sounds, appropriate temperatures, place attachment and spaces for physical exercise.

I want to create a space that is dedicated to improving the condition of recovering cancer patients through methods such as physical therapy, nutritional advising, yoga classes and relaxation. Inspired by the concept of the Maggie’s Centres, the space will provide patients with a healing environment during and after their treatment at the hospital. This is not to be mistaken for a medical centre, it is a support centre for patients, their families and friends and anyone affected by cancer.

Usually, when a patient is released from the hospital and finished their treatment they lose their support system, this centre will act as a safety net where they can retreat and relax. Staff will help cancer survivors and families cope with hardships of diagnosis and treatment, encourage a healthy recovery, foster a smoother transition from hospital to their life at home and, in the worst situations, dealing with grieving and loss.
