The Docks

During the industrial revolution the history of Brentford is well documented as a major transport interchange and dock. Numerous warehouses along the river were very active, and vessels travelled long distances to load and unload goods. However, these once busy and important warehouses now lie derelict, becoming lost and forgotten in a rapidly developing area of west London.

My design aims to enhance the character, function and aesthetic of the site and surrounding area by re-purposing three existing buildings to provide a multi-purpose music centre.

The overall concept has been influenced by the site’s industrial heritage and my design aims to expose and emphasise its strong structural, almost sculptural presence. The site’s historic use of moving people, boats and goods throughout the city, is reflected in the design’s play with movement and adaptation. The materiality used within the design intends to connect the space back to the environment, primarily by looking at the relationship the docks and surrounding boatyards have with the natural context.

By providing iconic interior and exterior spaces in a contemporary riverside setting, my design will offer a flexible venue to suit diverse needs throughout the day and re-engage a once forgotten space with the community.
