SUBMERGE - A platform diving design representing a regenerated social class system.

Built in 1907, Moseley Road Baths is a grade II* listed Victorian building sited in Balsall Heath, Birmingham. The spaces for its users were dominated by social hierarchy; the bathing and swimming pool facilities were divided into men’s and women’s, 1st and 2nd class.

This project re-invents the social class system though the physical design of platform diving.  This design initiative challenges the social class systems and creates a new perspective for platform diving which confronts existing social hierarchy.

All divers are united and equal on the level platform contrasting to the traditional platform diving. The diving pools then stagger accordingly so the users can perform 1, 3, 5 and 7.5m dives. Spectators can further be united into the experience by  viewing the sport from above, at eye level and below the water.

All users enter the building through one entrance in contrast to the existing three. Bathing and reflection spaces provide a mental and physical stimulating experience throughout the creative re-use of Moseley Road Baths.
