The city must be a place of waste, for one wastes space and time; everything mustn’t be foreseen and functional… the most beautiful cities were those where festivals were not planned in advance, but there was a space where they could unfold (Lefebvre, 1987, p38).

 

Overlooking Regents Canal in Bethnal Green, the now abandoned gasholder sits tall amongst its surroundings, a local landmark and an important industrial monument. 

 

 

Play is part of human nature; one is not taught how to play but simply adopts the innate behaviour. Play translates to all ages, with people actively seeking play as a form of escapism from the mundane boundaries of everyday reality. With reports showing London as the loneliest city to live, No 2 Gasholder will transform into a thriving social hub. Using the notions of ‘play’ through spatial and experiential design, human interaction amongst visitors will be celebrated
