MYCELIUM THE FUTURE

Magpie mine is an industrial site with a strong heritage in the Peak District, its future with such a strong past, its well known identity degrades with the erosion of the limestone bricks. In order to bring back life to the site new architectural styles have been influenced through the existing buildings, history of the production and its new future purpose. The material pallet has been well thought through to work alongside the existing one.

Within the site there is a linear exposed staircase which indents within the landscape and the rusted steel

finish was used to complement the existing bricks.

The lead mine based around process was the perfect opportunity to create a new evolving material called mycelium.

This is the vegetable part of fungus consisting of mass of branding, thread like hypae. By manipulation of its form, a new bio degradable material is created, which has the ability to be used within construction and design.
