The impact of humanity on Earth has become so large that some geologists are proposing we have changed the very rock beneath us, therefore entering a new era – the Anthropocene, defined as ‘the Human Layer’. The Industrial Revolution, born in Manchester, signifies the starting point of this irreversible change. The site lies within the setting of the viaducts of Castlefield providing a museum which reflects the layers of time.
